Kloof Neck Classic – 2009

Last year when I did this race I distinctly remember walking a lot, cursing the race a lot and hurting a lot in the days which followed.  This year, although not a leisurely walk in the park, it seemed to go by in a flash with very little cursing or walking and as for hurting – the sunburn I got after the race did more damage than the actual race itself…

Trying to better my time from last year’s 2:04 I intended on pushing hard during the race but ended up running a large portion of it with Yusaf, which was so entertaining I didn’t care about my time.  I guess my running has had me in my own little world lately and with my new years resolution being “To make new friends” I am not just plugging my ipod in at the start of the race, zoning out and only taking it out again at the end (going into my own little world where other runners don’t exist), I’m actually engaging in conversations which in the end help the hours go by plus you hear some really interesting life stories and there can be some fun banter on these races 😉

As usual the chatting was started with an enquiry about my running club and then moved swiftly onto Yusaf’s experience doing the Cape Odyssey, a race my mom has been trying to persuade me to do for ages now, but which I haven’t managed to wrap my head around and frankly won’t even let her talk to me about because I think it is craziness – although now…

Coming in at exactly the same time I did last year (give or take a few seconds) I still felt strong, dashing off after catching up with a few people milling about the end, for a fun day on the beach swimming and then live music in Kirstenbosch Gardens.

Conclusion: Even though I didn’t better my time, I certainly felt better after the race (last year I felt horrid and ended up sleeping for the rest of the day) and I’ve decided that to keep my motivation up I’m not going to aim for times, I’m going to aim for people connections…
